Project Overview

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is undertaking a major project to resurface approximately 1.6 miles of Main Street.  The project will encompass the area between Nelson Avenue to Colonial Drive.  Some areas of Main Street will be widened to accommodate both vehicles and cyclists.  Cement concrete sidewalks and vertical granite curbing will be installed along the corridor.  Guardrails will be replaced throughout the project limits.  The drainage system will be cleaned and repaired.  Additional drainage structures will be added where needed.  The work will include the installation of sediment and erosion control best management practices (BMPs) prior to the proposed activities.  The Project will improve safety, operations, and connectivity for all users, consistent with the Healthy Transportation Policy Directive (P-13-001 & E-20-001).  Specifically, the Project will enhance safety and connectivity by eliminating gaps in the sidewalk network, improving mid-block crossings and update intersection geometry to MassDOT standards to accommodate bicycle and pedestrian facilities.  A notice of Intent was filed with the Tewksbury Conservation Commission and an Order of Conditions was issued on May 11, 2021.
